Virgin Islands Olympic Sailing Team

The Budget

Winning an Olympic medal is one of the most difficult achievements in all sports particularly coming from a small nation with very limited resources. We are sailors with great potential and we need your help. A competitor must have the best equipment at all times and be totally focused on preparing mind and body for what happens on the water. What may seem to be a large budget of $185,000 is actually quite necessary if the athletes are going to be able to perform at the top of their games.

It all starts with the boats. We need 3: one in the US, one in Europe and one in China for pre-Olympic events.

Unfortunately racing at this level is extremely hard on the rigs and hulls of the boats. Constant maintenance and replacement of masts is necessary.

Sails are the engine of the boat. We must always have good ones.

$30K

Because we sail in every possible conditions, our personal on-the-water gear must be state of the art.

To reach the top level we must sail with the best sailors and be at the most competitive events, which take place in Europe, and we must be training every month of the year in a tolerable climate. This means lots of travel and housing costs.

$45K

No matter what the sport, the athletes at the top have the best coaches and our goal is to recruit the best.

$20K

No matter how well you sail, equipment and bodies are always on the move. Shipping of boats to regattas and transportation is a big part of our challenge. The right equipment at the right place is critical to our campaign.

What have we forgotten? The unknown is inevitable. We need a contingency fund for emergencies.
